Everything Comes out in the Wash……..

It’s truly surprising what turns up in a soil sample!
A tiny vole jawbone measuring 12mm.
This Roman critter, a field vole (Microtus agrestis) often found in meadows and field margins, as well as in woodland, dunes and anywhere with sufficient grass cover…has been identified by our Enviro Team.
Our expanding MK Palaeoenvironmental Dept plays a crucial role in identifying small mammals and other organic materials. Such finds help inform the historic narrative of our sites; what the inhabitants did; what they ate and who they shared their home with.
