30th August 2018
This copper alloy folding zoomorphic knife handle is “Hare and Hounds” type. Dated 3rd-4th Centuries AD it is 55.9mm long and 13.4mm wide.
The body of the hound is somewhat elongated compared to other examples with the hare correspondingly foreshortened (although also worn).
Hunting scenes are common in material culture of the Romano-British period, especially into the 4th Century.
