Briannie Price – The Torches are Lit
The Torches Are Lit, Let The Wassail Begin!
On the Twelfth night (6th of January), a little village in the rolling hills of Herefordshire was illuminated by a centuries old tradition; Wassailing.
What better way to start 2022 off than with a bang? The Leominster Morris Dancers took to the streets of Eardisland, with bells on their ankles and feathers in their hats, guiding the joyous crowd to an old orchard; waiting to be blessed.
What a spectacle it was to see! The tiny fires from people’s torches flickering on the surface of the River Arrow as they crossed over the old stone bridge. The low rumble of excited mums, dads, grandparents, children, partners and friends was like pleasant music to the ears.
Wassailing has traveled down through the ages, its origin stemmed from Pagan traditions. This ritual is repeated every year in hopes for a fruitful harvest to follow. The Morris dancers fill the ceremony with speeches, dancing, singing and offerings to the spirits to wish the harvest well. Of course, you can’t forget the much awaited cider/perry that is passed around for all to try and sip at whilst they watch the Leominster Morris dance and sing beneath the star filled sky.
We have also had a selection of slightly more global photographs, to reflect the world wide travel resuming.
Each winner has won an e-voucher from either Amazon or Marks & Spencer’s.
We look forward to receiving your February entries, hopefully there will be some stunning sunsets and scenery that reflect this time of year!
The deadline for February’s entries is the 28th February.
