Archaeological Field Evaluation

Location: South Gloucestershire

Key Points

  • 30 trench's excavated in a area to the south of Dewshall
  • Relics field boundaries were uncovered with dating largly based on cartographic evidence
  • 12-13th Century pottery was found as well as residual animal bone

Summary

The site occupied an irregular field delineated by hedgerows and ancient woodland of Dewshill to the north.

A total of 30 evaluation trenches, were opened to provide a comprehensive assessment of the site’s archaeological and palaeoenvironmental potential.

Of the 30 trenches excavated, three contained archaeological features of interest comprising of relict field boundaries. The dating of these features is largely based of cartographic evidence, specifically the Tithe Map of 1845.

There was little datable evidence found; two trenches on the northwest of site contained residual animal bone and 12th to 13th century pottery. The pottery was identified as cooking pots and the animal bone, retrieved from the same contexts as the pottery, suggested some domestic activity on the site.

Results

The programme of archaeological field evaluation confirmed the presence of post-medieval field boundaries.

Nine sherd of medieval pottery were recovered with a likely date of 12-13 Century.
