Key Points
- Programme of Fieldwork on behalf of the Isle of Wight Council
- Located within the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Puckpool Mortar Battery
- Possible remains uncovered forming part of barrack block
Summary
The groundworks were carried out manually along the line of an existing main, with trenching reopened and new pipework installed.
The trenching revealed the partial masonry remains of several service buildings, including the latrine block, and drainage features which related to the use of the site in the early 20th century; however, exposures were very limited due to the narrow trench width.
No evidence of earlier occupation was encountered during the groundworks and no finds recovered.
Results
Partial remains of several brick build service buildings were uncovered, all of which are shown on a site plan of 1904.
