Archaeological Standing Building Recording

Location: Llanbadarn Fynydd, Powys

Key Points

  • Archaeological Standing Building Recording of an abandoned farm dwelling in Llanbadarn Fynydd, Powys. The abandoned farm dwelling was the focus of a proposed development, designed to convert the former labourer’s cottage into holiday accommodation. This included full internal and external restoration of the building, together with new access, installation of a treatment plant and associated works.
  • The Archaeological Standing Building Recording was informed by a site visit, consultation of the Clwyd/Powys Archaeological Trust Historic Environment Record, and analysis of historic mapping and documentary records.

Summary

The survey identified that the building was probably constructed in the late 18th or 19th century as a labourer’s or smallholder’s cottage, of longhouse-type with a small two-storey dwelling at the north end (which has mostly collapsed) and an attached barn (both stone-built) with a timber-framed open shelter shed for livestock, which may be slightly later in date than the rest of the building. Documentary evidence suggests a date of c. 1843-50 for the building.

Results

The Archaeological Standing Building Recording discharged a planning condition stipulated by Powys County Council. The application for planning permission was approved.
