Conservation Management Plan, Bradford
Our experience in conservation management brought us into contact with Kala Sangam, a dynamic multi-cultural arts venue in Bradford that was seeking support with a National Lottery Heritage Fund application.
In Brief
Key Points
- Situated among a fine stock of Victorian buildings in the city’s Cathedral Precinct Conservation Area
- An imposing Grade II Listed Building designed for the Post Office in 1886 by architect Sir Henry Tanner
Summary
Capital funding was sought to develop a state-of-the-art community-focused centre which respected its historic surroundings and which would be ready to relaunch in celebration of Bradford’s year as UK City of Culture 2025.
The centre is based in St Peter’s House, an imposing Grade II Listed Building designed for the Post Office in 1886 by architect Sir Henry Tanner who favoured a French Neo-Renaissance chateau style. Typical of the late 19th century, the building is a valued local heritage asset situated among a fine stock of Victorian buildings in the city’s Cathedral Precinct Conservation Area.
Three of our senior staff visited the centre to gain a detailed understanding of the architecture and facilities and received a warm welcome from all.
Results
Based on the results of the visit, coupled with detailed documentary research, we were able to compile a Conservation Management Plan to accompany the funding application which detailed the procedures and actions needed to secure the future of this standout Victorian building in its role as Bradford Arts Centre.
