Student work placements 2024
Over the years, Border Archaeology has enjoyed offering work experience placements to secondary school students and this year has been a busy one. At our MK office, we have taken on 3 students, Jasmine a Year 10 student for a two-week placement and Callum and Caine, Year 12 students for one week each.
All the students were brilliant and gave their placements 100%, behaving in a professional manner and asking some great questions along the way.
After the initial induction, the placements follow a similar format with some time spent in the various departments and depending on their own interests, an end of placement project is designed for them. This year alongside finds and environmental processing, we were able to include some time in Osteology and Geomatics. The staff enjoy this as much as the students and it generally creates a friendly rivalry as to which department is preferred by the student. It seems Osteology was a clear winner this year.
This year, we had a student with a visual impairment so a pre-start meeting was held with him and his parents to discuss what or if any additional help would be needed to be put in to place. The short answer was none, he was a star and he excelled with the Osteology tasks and hopes to go forward to study Forensics.
Jasmine also enjoyed her time in Osteology and was a natural, helping work through an assemblage of Romano-British burials.
Caine, enjoyed the Environmental elements and was able to identify some seeds and undertake some research on his identifications.
Hopefully 3 more archaeologists of the future!
